Today was Gladiator's last day on earth. Today was Madera Shelter day, where I go and fall in love with 100 more dogs that I can't save. I cuddle the sick, try to help the shy come out of there shells, and network as many as I can. For the lucky few, I'm able to rewrite their future. For some, I'm just the last bit of compassion they take with them over the rainbow bridge. Rescue is hard, but shelter life is harder. Today when in the office I saw the stack of kennel cards on the counter. I knew what it meant but I never look. Call me selfish, but some days I can't handle knowing who's next and the heart shattering fact I can't save them. For some reason today was different, and when I glanced over, I saw a face I recognized. A gentle giant that upon intake looked straight into my soul with his ice blue eyes. I never forget a dog. Call it a talent but once I love a dog it's over. I always joke around that people shouldn't let me pet the dogs. I touch it, it touches a part of me I try to repair daily with others who have been broken too. When I confirmed that it sure in fact was my big blue eyed beauty, my heart triggered hero mode, and here we are. A shy dog who doesn't walk on a leash, and happens to be 75 pounds makes things hard. Dogs like him don't make it out. I instantly grabbed a leash and walked back to his kennel. He remembered me you could tell, then again in a Helga squeaky voice I greeted him every time I was at the shelter. I placed the slip lead over his head, and on his brakes he slammed. A few

A few "no I'm not going" moments, and a single alligator roll didn't shy me away. What he didn't know, is I'm not a quitter. So I picked up all 75 pounds of him and outside we walked. Well, at least I did. First step is cuddles. We sat there for some time as I reassured him petting him all over, and giving him kisses on the head. A few moments into our cuddle session he oh so gently placed both his front feet on my lap holding back his weight, and laid down. He placed his gigantic head onto my chest, and with every bit of his being, pushed into me. As I hugged him closely telling him he's the goodest boy, I also had the pep talk with him that he needed to hear. Throughout the cuddle session he kept his gentleman demeanor. Note, he doesn't kiss on first date. After our talk, it was baby talking him. Every step got pets, every two got hugs. This boy worked for love. Pretty sure if you look up the definition of love in the dictionary his face is there. Within 15 minutes he walked on a leash like a pro. We walked through doors, in and out of buildings, to multiple different fields, and around cars. Once we got to my car we snuck some treats out of it, and this boy then acted like a show dog who's been walking on a leash his whole life. Even at a perfect heel sometimes. Can you imagine his potential in the right hands if that's what he accomplished in minutes? We then walked over to a grassy area where I balanced dandelions on his head, and he preceded to roll over for belly rubs. He then began playing with me, making silly faces, and the dog that I knew was hiding in a kennel came out. Did I mention he's just 6 months old? The dog he's meant to be shined through and it was brighter then the sun in the sky today. The same dog, who was due to loose his life today. It's horrible that humans fail them. Gladiator is a 6 month old Saint Bernard Pyrenees mix. This breed is not for everyone and he will require a breed experienced home. He is huge and still all puppy. Although he entered the shelter with another dog, he hasn't been 100% dog tested yet. I'd love to see him go to a home where he can thrive as a only dog because he deserves that kind of love. It is unknown how he is with cats or anything about his past. He has a week to exit the shelter with a 501c3 rescue organization with room or a adopter. #ShelterDog #adoptdontshop #rescue #Dog #Dogsofttiktok #rescuedogsoftiktok #SecondChance #raw #reality #fyp #Help #SpayandNeuter #animals
