@letstalkbabywearing: I didn’t know my baby was autistic at the time. But looking back, so much makes sense now. This was the baby who didn’t want to be on my front, didn't cuddle, and didn’t often want eye contact. But on my back? That’s where we found our rhythm. Back carrying became the only way they wanted to be held. It gave them space and control. A break from the intensity of face-to-face interaction, while still being close enough to regulate through the movement, warmth, and rhythm of my body. While many babies seek out the chest for comfort, mine often found it overwhelming. The back carry became our bridge—meeting their needs while still allowing me to parent with connection. There’s actually science to support this. Autistic nervous systems process sensory input differently, and babywearing (especially on the back) can offer just enough deep pressure and proprioceptive input to help regulate—without flooding the senses with too much. Social anxiety, overwhelm, and sensory processing challenges were already showing up in infancy—but I didn’t recognize them for what they were. Now, although we don’t have an official diagnosis yet, several medical professionals have confirmed what I’ve long suspected. They can’t formally diagnose for various systemic reasons, but they all agree: this is autism. Babywearing didn’t “fix” anything—it supported us. It gave my child a way to feel safe in the world and gave me a way to meet them where they were. That’s what it’s always been about. If you have a child on the spectrum or who experiences their own sensory challenges, what has your experience been? We saw: 💗 Preference for back carries 💗 Using it as a shield from the world when it was overwhelming 💗 A source of regulation 💗 Sensitivity over the fabric/feel of the carrier 💗 Only way they accepted closeness for a long time and especially when already overwhelmed (This is a different baby, I don't share which specific child is struggling with what online, but also try to share the realities and challenges that are unique to different circumstances.) #babywearing #autism #asd #spectrum

Any tips for convincing your autistic 16 month old the carrier is not created by satan? He hates it but always wants to be held 🙂
