I’m an 80s baby. Born in 82. I grew up in the foster care system and the Cosby show was one of the only if not the only show that gave me hope. I would watch that show religiously sitting in my foster moms sitting room. I never missed an episode. The Huxtables were the family I never had. The family I wish I had. Growing up in multiple foster homes and children shelters, I would watch that show and dreamt I was Rudy and that Theo was my brother and Heathcliff & Claire where are my parents. I would dream I had all them sisters and I had a real successful, beautiful family that went through the same things as everyone else. I would dream that they adopted me. I remember when the show ended in the 90s. I cried so hard and my foster mom could not understand it. I cried for days. What she didn’t understand was, I thought I was losing my family. I had been passed around from so many different foster homes and shelters where I never truly felt loved . I thought the the Huxtables saw me. I thought I would never see them again. I thought they were leaving me just like everyone in my life had always done. I don’t really remember how old I was but I’m thinking I might’ve been somewhere around eight or nine. Now I’m 43 years old and I’ve showed my children those shows. This still doesn’t feel real to me and I don’t want to believe it’s true. It’s really cool knowing that he homeschooled his daughter. I have four children and I homeschooled mine as well. Two have since then graduated. My daughter is going into her last year of high school, and my youngest is going into sixth grade and working at seventh and eighth grade level.
