Curtains are good to keep the heat out. But depends what kind of curtains you use and how much. They are also good to keep the warmth inside the room in winter

do you ever see double roofs? Like, a thin shade layer put on top of the roof maybe 1-2 feet off the main roof just to provide shade for the home?

yea big roof is lying to you. why would metal it asphalt help cool the house? put a tarp over ur roof to block the sun from ur roof and keep it 10° cooler

I'm renting a small old house that was pretty hot last summer, so this year the windows and doors that I don't open I put plastic on them on the inside and the outside plus the largest window I put a reflective blanket on the inside and it made a huge difference, I open the windows at night to let cool air in, and on hot days I Close them around 10 am, all that made a huge difference
