I do work in heteroscedastic probabilities PCA as an applied math PhD. Right now I am trying to prove the optimization landscape of this loss function is benign. It basically involves solving a heterogeneous sum of quadratic forms problem over the steifel manifold. But the problem is this landscape is nonconvex. So I have to prove that even though this error function has an nonconvex landscape, it still converges to a global minimum. It’s turning out to be very difficult

Not true that the residuals have to be normal for the best ols fit, as long as the residuals have equal variance and are uncorrelated. See Gauss Markov theorem…
