There’s only one reason to be a parent: you really want to raise a human being. Everything else is the wrong reason

I was crying 15 mins ago because I was mentally and physically exhausted from my 12mo . I love her to death . I am OK now and can't wait to wake up all night to her .

Having kids it's always giving, never gaining. They didn't ask to come in this world, you bring them, all responsibility on you. People who not ready for endless sacrifices shouldn't have kids ever 😅

Reading through the comments, it’s clear to me a lot of people are speaking from very black-and-white perspectives about parenting but life isn’t that simple. I wish it was. People become parents for all kinds of reasons. Some planned. Some not planned. Some weren’t ready but still showed up and raised beautiful humans with love and strength. Saying there is only one right reason to have kids dismisses the complexity of life, trauma, and choice. There’s room for nuance here and for honoring those who didn’t have a picture perfect start but still became amazing parents.

I thought I wanted kids (raised Mormon so being a mom was IT) then I had one, and realized “woah! That’s enough!” I’m a one-and-done mom, and I tell most women “don’t have kids.” 🤷‍♀️love my kid endlessly, but being a parent is the hardest shit ever.

As a parent to a disabled child, the possibility always exists that your child could be born disabled or become disabled. If you are not prepared to potentially take care of someone their entire life, DO NOT have children.

Actually, mad respect for people who know that they don’t want children, and then don’t have children. You’re making the right choice for everybody and kudos to you.

as a childess teacher, YES. I see unwanted and resented kids all the time. I did some soul searching and realized I would be a "good" parent but I would ultimately resent my kids and I NEVER want to do that to a child. NEVER. no child deserves that. I adore my students. thats how I parent. I teach.

I never wanted to be a single parent. It looked so hard, and I never found a partner I trusted to co-parent with. But I also agree with the guy, like the way society tried to make me feel sad that I don’t have kids and never will is so toxic. Have kids. Don’t have kids. But just like religion, stop trying to convert people.

Someone who genuinely likes kids and want kids wouldn't even question if it's "worth it" or not.

I tell people all the time you need to want kids, yearn for them, want them badly to make it worth it. Parenting for me is giving them a good, loving childhoods I expect nothing for them, they will grow up and live their own lives one day. They don't owe their parents anything.

I think you should have let the rest of the video play. He actually makes a pretty nuanced argument about how many parents would describe their perfect day by first saying something like they'd "drop the kids at grandma's". If a perfect day doesn't involve kids, why should he have them?

Parents have kids because they want something out of it. It is ridiculous to pretend otherwise. They want fulfilment, entertainment, someone to take care of them in old age etc. Parents definitely have kids because they think it will be 'worth it'. Every reason parents have for wanting kids is something they think will make it worth it.

kids are not an investment, they're an experience. the outcome is still unpredictable, but you're for sure not going to end up less tired and with more money. I've loved being a mom though.
