So I feel like your enjoyment of the film was hindered by your lack of "want" to see for a lack of a better term. For the last say 15 years or so Superman and Superman media has been "God like being is Jesus" or "Anyone who is like Superman would be evil". This is a movie of hope, kindness, and being authentic. Marvel, especially since Infinity War has been less about the people and about scope and building a universe. This felt like picking up a new issue of Superman, ready to see what we're up to in this arc. We don't need origins for a character almost 100 years old now. Setting his universe up to be ready off the cuff was what we needed and helps that awful "guess who's next" feeling marvel has become. Gunn isn't perfect but this feels like the DC and movies we've always wanted. The cartoons and animated material that understands the characters come to life. I personally would say watch one of the cartoons or maybe even pick a small arc of the comics to read and then give this a rewatch. I think your enjoyment would be bigger if you came in liking Superman a bit more. it's not a perfect film but I think it's better than you are giving it credit for.

As someone who is a big DC fan, I feel like Lex Luther was portrayed very accurately in this film. The way Lex is set up in comics and a few official DC projects is his own brain is what faults him. Like the movie said it is brain versus Braun, Superman can't truly defeat Lex Luther because Lex is always thinking a few steps ahead. But whenever Lex makes one tiny mistake or miscalculates one little thing, his whole plan unravels just like in the movie. I understand where you're coming from where you would want more push and pull between the main protagonist and antagonist, but that's really just not Superman and like Luther's relationship dynamic. Lex Luther isn't some big bad of the DC universe like Thanos is. Yes he's a big villain, but he isn't this all dangerous being he's a human with high intelligence. He isn't some big beefy alien who is trying to change the entire universe. He's meant to be more like Kingpin than Thanos. if you want a little more of Lex Luther and Superman's dynamic, but don't want to fully jump into a comic, TV show or movie I suggest looking up on YouTube Justice league battle for Metropolis and watching play through

Louis literally states she was planning on breaking up with Clark. then he says he loves her and goes off to risk his life...why then does that mean she should say "I love you" back to him when he returns!?! no! that is not love

I think you not being invested in Superman up to this point really is the base of your negative feelings about it. And I think that’s fine. But this film’s audience I think is for people who haven’t been happy with Superman media for a looooong time

Super only lost one or two fights in that movie the fight against the kaiju was ended abruptly because of what the justice gang did Superman turned himself in to try to find crypto and he was doing pretty well on a 2v1 where he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone

I think comparing the culmination, that is Thanos to literally the first DCCU movie Luther is kinda like unfair/misguided?🤔 one is the greatest villain in an establish cinematic super hero universe and another is 1 of the many rogues in super man's roster in the new DCCU.

I think this is a fine take but I disagree with the overall sentiment. I do wholeheartedly agree that the Lois and Clark relationship is half baked. But lex is a comic book villain and acts like one and I don’t have a problem with that. I think Gunn’s mindset of if you were to pick up a comic in a store you wouldn’t start at the beginning of these characters stories and that’s ok is applied to this movie good but not perfectly. I don’t like all the comments just calling this dude brain dead

I'm not a comic book reader either. I liked it, but I was hoping to be pumps-fist-in-the-air loving it, but that didn't happen. The hype got to me?

I honestly don’t know how to explain that the movie felt personally compelling. The theme that even when everything is “lost” it’s not because you have good people in your corner. It personally felt overwhelming hopeful to me.

Honestly this is a fine take for the movie. I do agree with you on the fact that Clark and Lois’s relationship didn’t make me feel much. I like the scene where they initially fought and I thought it was strong, but sadly we didn’t get much. Another thing I can understand is how this movie can feel like, “a sequel to another Superman movie that doesn’t exist.” While I get that I kinda like it for that reason. We don’t need for the 1000th time to see Superman’s backstory. It allows them to set up a universe where they can introduce more characters instead of spending it on information we already know. And honestly with Lex, I liked how this felt more inline with Lex from the comics because the last Lex Luthor we got was Jessie Eisenberg and it just didn’t feel like Lex. Lex in this movie is a lot more intimidating, cunning, egotistical, prideful and always a step ahead. And personally, I like that Lex lost because of his own hubris. I think him constantly besting Superman is fine because, 1. It helps establish Superman’s character as unwavering perseverance and continuing to want to do good no matter how many times he gets knocked down. And 2. It goes to prove that even though Lex had the capabilities to win, he never could. And that is because of his own ego and how that made him sloppy and caused his downfall. Overall though, I completely understand your perspective on this.

Thoughts on the movie aside, for the Superman script poster I would love for it to be the midcredit scene of Superman and Krypto sitting on the moon looking down at the Earth.

your take makes Sense as this movie makes a lot of reference to the Lore of each character (Jimmy and his insane game with women, Kara at the end, etc), Clark and Lois are meant to be half baked as they are still starting and Lois has Trust issues before they besame DCs power couple, at times the movie feels overcombulated for each plot string tbh and Superman gets overshadowed by the supporting cast at times but his highs aré really high compared to the rest, i would say watch Supergirl when It comes out as they story Will deal More with the trauma she feels as she lost her world twice and if ITS half as good as the cómic Is based on ITS gonna be amazing

These are totally valid points. I agree with some and disagree with others. It’s sad we can’t really have a conversation about it because the internet is insane right now about this movie. 🤷‍♂️

Okay, so by this logic, if you watch a movie where two characters are portrayed as older and younger siblings, for example Big Hero 6, you won’t care when the older sibling dies because you didn’t see when the younger sibling was born and got to grow up to care about his older sibling. Got it. I swear, the negative critics I keep hearing about this movie is weird cause it’s something the same reviewer won’t complain about another movie. Also, saying you didn’t have any nostalgic experience with the John William’s score until this month cause it’s when you watched the Donna Superman and bashing this one for using a rendition of it makes no sense. You either are nostalgic about the score so you cherish it or you don’t. I’m wondering if you had a problem with X-men 97 using a rendition of the original X-men cartoon theme.

I can see where this take comes from but I think it comes from how you frame the movie. If you look at it as “Superman Vs Lex Luthor: The Movie” then yeah, it would’ve fallen flat. But what we got is “Superman saves people and Lex gets in the way: The Movie”. Because at its core, the film wasn’t about a battle between Superman and Alex, it’s about Superman doing as much good as he possibly can and Lex doing whatever he can to stop him. Lex isn’t “winning” the whole movie bc Superman is still saving people. If that wasn’t what you were looking for in the movie, that’s understandable, but I think it’s the thing you missed. I would recommend rewatching the scene of Lois interviewing Clark as Superman.

Honestly I feel like part of the problem is that this film seems to have been made for already established fans of superman first and foremost. They aren’t doing an origin story or showing the beginning of relationships or motivations because most audiences have seen it 100 times over, and have little interest in a rehashing. Lex’s motivations are clear when you are more familiar with the character. I think this movie is similar to the first marvel Spiderman movie with Tom holland. They skipped Ben dying and being bitten by the spider because it’s been done too many times over. This superman movie seems to be going for a small window into his life to introduce to you what his values are and who he is as a person, rather than to introduce you to his story.

I loved it, but I do agree on a few points, in particular Lex (while brilliantly played and well executed as a character in the moment) felt like he was missing a lot of his foundations; his motivations, his objectives, his sheer level of power in the world felt barely sketched out. Tonally I thought Gunn nailed it though (GOTG3 I dislike like you, partly because of the horrendous tonal issues). So much of this movie I just thought was spot on - this is what I want Superman to be. This is what I want a comic book movie to be. It tickled me, at least a 7.5/10, Gunn’s second best after TSS. Maybe you’ll like it more on rewatches, if not I hope the next projects (and it sounds like there’s plenty of variety coming!) satisfy you more :)
