@doctor.nicolej: It’s nearly black Wednesday so that means some new F1s will be rolling out onto a ward near you. All the videos I usually see on this topic just say the same stuff over and over so here’s my unhinged tips and tricks! I remember being so nervous before starting F1 but try not to worry! #nhs #nhsuk #doctorsofinstagram #residentdoctors #juniordoctors
Yes but I can’t stand all of this “bake for the nurses” so you get on their good side and don’t bully you. Erm they shouldn’t be bullying you in the first place and you shouldn’t feel like you have to bribe them, it sets up a weird dynamic which normalises toxic behaviour

I always do a very quick round at 11pm (when my shift starts and A&E is still BUSY) to answer questions but mainly let nurses know I always do another round past the wards after it all quiets down, so they know to save non-emergent Qs for my *actual* round. And obvs give them my personal bleep - so they can call me for anything that can’t or shouldn’t wait!

As an F1 just finishing, I don’t agree with the first one. Sometimes it’s good to keep a bit of distance and not be overly friendly as it could go the other way and they’ll feel more comfortable bleeping for little things

Going to the wards and introducing yourself and doing jobs early is the BEST tip for new F1s. The nurses will make your life so much easier if you do this. Great tips

Also, if someone is sick, they know you and you know them. And doing the work BEFORE they call always hits the nurses as great!

but how do you get time to go to the wards and do random jobs without having a bunch of potentially deteriorating people to prioritise 😭

Love this! Another tip from a nurse, please say who you are when answering a bleep. We bleep so many people (ops manager/medics/surgeons/ooh pharmacists) and it’s not always clear who’s answering the bleep from the display. I often pick up the phone to a “what’s up?” and I feel so bad asking who you are 😭 Love you guys though and looking forward to working with you all <3

For nights. More hospitals need to adopt the Hospital at night way of working. It’s like living in the Stone Age otherwise
