My mom made lasagna with cottage cheese growing up. I don’t know if she just didn’t like the texture of ricotta or if it was a misunderstanding because English wasn’t her first language. I still add a little to mine because it tastes familiar.

I LOVE cottage cheese. Like eat it straight from the container by the massive spoonful. do NOT put cottage cheese in anything that isn't a savory dish. I don't want it in dessert. I don't want it in a smoothie. And do not tell me to use it as a substitute in anything either!

Not sure what's available over there, but in some parts of Europe we also have kwark and verse kaas (some say they're the same, but idk for sure). Despite them being called cheese (kaas), they taste more like yogurt, but with less fat and also decent protein content. I love using them as cottage cheese and sour cream substitute, and I find them suitable for both sweet and savory recipes.
