The Irish War of Independence (1919–1921) was fought mostly by nationalists in the IRA, not Marxist revolutionaries. After independence, Ireland did not become a socialist country. In fact, early Irish governments were conservative and Catholic, often hostile to communism. Connolly’s dream of a workers’ republic never materialized — he was executed after the 1916 Easter Rising, and his socialist ideals were largely sidelined.
