@chiefgyk3d: Pirate Software said VPNs are never a security tool. That’s just… wrong. Sure, they’re oversold in ads, but VPNs are essential in real cybersecurity: Site-to-site connections, secure remote access, even self-hosted routing. If you’ve studied for a CISSP, you know VPNs have their place. #PirateSoftware #VPN #Cybersecurity #StopKillingGames #Infosec #CISSP #Networking #TechTok #RedTeam #BlueTeam
Context matters. PS is not talking about remote access VPNs or site to site. He is talking about the likes of Nord VPN and PIA that claim to make your browsing safer and more secure. In my opinion, those products are not a security tool. Your organisation's VPN client, be it Forticlient, Global Protect, or even OpenVPN is definitely a security product, as it is to securely access corporate resources, but he's not talking about those.

He didn’t say they’re not a security tool. He said they are not a security PRODUCT. He is arguing that despite the advertising hype, in and of themselves, they are not a security product! Yes, they can be used as part of an entire security design! But it is not a security product in its own right.

Ok but to me it‘s clear from the context that he is not talking about VPNs for access to corporate networks, but rather the average user connecting to NordVPN and thinking they are all of the sudden untouchable.

I don’t disagree but also it’s worth remembering he’s saying this not in the realm of proper professional cyber security and it’s also incredibly simplistic (to the point of being wrong in a lot of contexts) but it’s not inherently wrong, for the average person a vpn isint and won’t be a security product and the adage of never log on to sensitive accounts or access sensitive info on a public network is good advice

I commented on that video saying that he does not know what he's talking about referring to exactly what you just said and was insta bullied by people saying "you know who he is???"
Thank you! I love your content ❤️

Separate topic. What are you using to study for the CISSP? Potential employer has a requirement for it and I'm just starting to look into it.

I don't think the idea that VPNs are garbage is exclusively a Pirate Software idea. Like I've heard that from people for years.

VPNs are supposed to be a layer of protection; an imperfect one, to be fair, but it is DEFINITELY a layer of securirty, ESPECIALLY when talking about things like public untrusted wifi. He is talking out his ahh if he doesn’t understand that SUPER BASIC principle. FFS, I am only just starting my IT/Cybersec journey, and even I got that point pretty fast.

I agree with PS's take. As a product, where someone else sets up the server and just sells me access to it, a VPN will never be secure in my view. However, if the infrastructure is set up by myself or someone I trust, then I would consider it secure, but at this point it's not a product, it's just a tool.

Hah I saw that vid and even tho I’m not in security I thought that was suspicious. If it does nothing for security why do I have to be on one to log into any of my work accounts

I had the exact same thought when I saw that video, but I had only enjoyed Pirate's stories beforehand. Seeing the VPN video I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was being hyperbolic that for the average person, they don't know how to use them to actually be more secure

I use WG for connecting edge nodes to internal routers. I also use it for connecting clients to a known non-hostile network. I am not sure if it adds real world security but it makes everything just work and I can highly recommend.

Now I could be wrong and PS has really gone downhill lately, but I'm pretty sure he meant purely just consumer vpns. I think we can all agree that there's a certain place for vpns, fuck, I have a hybrid cloud that's made possible using vpns, but unless you control the exit of the tunnel your security is honestly probably moot. Who says that sketchy-vpn.123 isn't giving data to Lexus Nexus or china. Who says they have good security? I think the claim that a consumer VPN is for security is kinda ridiculous. Sure vpns can be used for security, but his audience is likely people with a slight technical background or some interest in software development vs someone who would set up their own vpn

Thor showing incompetence in another field that based on his resumé he should have at least basic knowledge of. Is he the guy behind the digging a hole game? Cause he seems to be pretty good at that. Oh wait, that game was kinda fun and not absolute 💩 in source code
