How does erasing Black excellence make us great? 🤨 And what kind of person wants to spend millions of dollars to do that?? There are so many dumb and messy things about this “priority” for the Trump administration. The families of esteemed service members WEREN’T EVEN CONTACTED about this. They found out through the press. When Trump and Hegseth talk about this they act like it’s some kind of “superstition”. Trump said in a speech “We won a lot of battles, we shouldn’t go changing the names now.” Millions of dollars for a superstition? bffr 🙄 I did a lot of research about this. Fun fact, a lot of those confederate names and statues weren’t originally put in place until the 20th century. It was hard to find much written about the new Fort Lee namesake. Picking soldiers with the same last names as confederates is already bad— but propping up a Black American who didn’t even have the RIGHT TO VOTE when he served, based on having the same last name as Robert E. Lee is seriously deranged. And then ON TOP OF THAT you discover “Fitz Lee” was also the name of a prominent relative of Robert E. Lee, who ALSO fought for the confederacy. It’s like the grossest wink and nod. Like these people really have no shame. Virginians have made it clear, we don’t want our schools, parks or public places named after the separatists and insurrectionists who fought for the confederacy. Not only because they LOST but because they were DECIDEDLY not American. Our communities, service members and their families deserve better. If you’re in VA or any of the states with these restored names (TX, GA, NC, LA, AL) you should absolutely share this and speak out. Contact your representatives. We have midterm elections coming up and we’re not going to pay to go backwards. ✊ #rva #virginia #virginiaisforlovers #equality #antiracism @COURIER @RVAMAG
