A trans pool player has spoken out after being banned from competing in several women’s events. Professional player Harriet Haynes, who was the top-ranked women’s player of 2024, is taking legal action against The English Blackball Pool Federation on the grounds of discrimination, who banned transgender women from competing in the ladies tour and county tournaments in August 2023. On Sunday 6 April, a protest took place outside the Ultimate Women’s Pro series match after Haynes beat another transgender player Lucy Smith in the final. Protesters stood outside the venue in Wigan with signs saying ‘save women’s sport.’ Broadcaster Piers Morgan labelled the pool final “preposterous” in a post on Twitter/X, writing: “Why anyone supports this cheating bulls**t is utterly beyond me.” The English Blackball Pool Federation have argued that transgender women, on average, have a higher break speed than players assigned female at birth, as well as greater hand span, stronger fingers, and longer limbs. Haynes arrived at Canterbury Crown Court On Monday 7th April to submit expert evidence, with the help of an MIT professor, that as long as the player can break above a certain speed, which is achievable to both sexes, there is no inherent advantage gained by a higher cue velocity. Haynes told Canterbury Crown Court that her success is down to her efforts, the coaching she had and playing ladies county blackball pool, something she’s not able to do now as a result of the ban. Ms Hayne’s barrister has argued that although some sports, such as tennis, are gender effected, eight-ball pool is close to the boundary. #pool #blackballpool #transwoman #womenssports #transrights #lgbtqia
