While I hate this plot point… I quite enjoy that the author never shies away from killing the characters. She wants to show the true cost of war. Some other authors are too scared to kill fan favorites and somehow everyone always makes it out or is healed.

When I first read this part I was in the car with my family and I just stared at my sister (who already read the hunger games) and was like "did Finnick just die!?" and she was like "yep". I refused to believe her (my sister has a history of tricking me into thinking book characters are dead until they suddenly walk back) so I didn't believe her until I reached back home and re-read the scene. Then I bawled for a solid 20 minutes because Finnick was my man and I truly think I can never love another man again. Like, my future partner will need to understand that my true love is Finnick 🫣
