They are LYING to you about age affecting your ability to build muscle 😤 “Just wait til you’re 30” “Just wait til you’re 40” “Just wait til you’re… (insert age) I don’t know what it is about 2025 but it seems like people think once you get past a certain age, you might as well put yourself in the grave. I’ve heard things like “it’s a waste of time to lift, you’ll just hurt yourself.” Or “what’s the point in lifting after age ___, it’s not like you’re going to build muscle.” The reality is that you can build muscle at ANY AGE with proper programming & hard work. In fact, even research in frail elderly over age 90 has shown that resistance training WORKS with these people building significant muscle mass, increasing strength, & improving their quality of life (PMID: 29188577, 33921356, & 34302941) Additionally, resistance training has been shown to DECREASE pain in elderly, so we can just stop with that absolute nonsense (PMID: 24149478 & 39728043) Of course the earlier you start the better because you want to take advantage of the benefits of resistance exercise for as long as possible, but if you’ve never trained before & you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, etc… NOW is the RIGHT time to start Now there are some disadvantages. Older people require more total protein to get the same anabolic response (~25-50% more) but they can still achieve the same response as young if they get enough!
