The truth is, Stefan never truly loved Elena for who she really was. When she became a vampire, he tried to "fix" her—even though that went against her own will—because he didn’t want her to be a vampire. Simply put, he didn’t "love" her if she was like that. Damon, on the other hand, met her first, and that was love at first sight. He "confessed" his feelings to her without even truly knowing her. He saved her without even knowing her. He wished for her to achieve everything she wanted—again, without even knowing her. He let his humanity surface because of her.
Not to mention that Stefan only loved her when she was human. He always did whatever Elena wanted, even if that meant letting her die. Damon didn’t care about anything else—only about Elena and her life. Damon loved her when she still had her parents, when she lost them, when she was human, and when she became a vampire.
Elena is a deep, complex girl, with a tragic past—she deserves someone who challenges her, who explores her soul, who makes her feel intensity, who makes her feel alive! Stefan only approached her to "get to know her" because she looked like Katherine.
And that’s why I am, and always will be, Team Damon.
