@ginad129: Replying to @Jamie Hall3108 The IP owner will come to you, and the best way to be ready is to have an agent and some completed “audition” material #writingcommunity #writingtips #bookeditor #publishing #writers #bookcoaching #writersontiktok #writersoftiktok #traditionalpublishing
The way to get those jobs: have a career in an adjacent genre and a track record writing smaller IP including a reputation for being easy to work with & making your deadlines.
Source: I'm writing D&D and Shadowrun this year & have friends who write for MtG, Pathfinder, Star Trek, & Star Wars.

I do have a tangential question: could you talk a little about derivative works based on public domain stories like "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?" Are there any maybe not so obvious pitfalls to avoid?

Talked to a guy writing a novelization of Elden Ring. Was going to sell it to them once they realized how good it was after he was done. Couldn’t be convinced that they already had GRRM for that if they wanted. Couldn’t be told to take his inspiration and channel it into original characters and setting. Convinced he was sitting on a goldmine. This happens often.

That means they want to write Star Wars content. Don't.

Literally the single most important piece of advice here is DO NOT F WITH DISNEY

Some IP holders with large libraries will have occasional short story contests. In the event they do try to win one to get on their radar.

After reading Tusk Love, I realized how cool it would be to be able to write for Critical Role or other similar IP. I obviously realized Thea Guanzon was already established. Nice to hear that I’m on the right track writing adjacent work!

a bit of a tangent but I wrote a fanfic and then someone stole it and put it for sale on Amazon. I was like. dude, I don't even profit off of it. it's a fanfic.
(I managed to get Amazon to remove the story pretty quickly but still was quite a mindfuck)

I wrote two books in Star Wars after the last movie just hurt me. It'll never see the light of day. That's okay. It's for me.

so John scalzi wrote a piece of fanfic for the little fuzzy universe, he approached the h beam piper estate and they allowed him to publish it. he's a multi bestselling writer and had published several books before that

And if you do write something and it’s good and they like it, they owe you nothing. If you send them that manuscript, they can just take it, they own the IP, it already belongs to them, they could turn your book into an entire franchise and they don’t actually have to pay you anything for it.

Question: How long is too long for a chapter? I have a really big action scene (there are 5 trials the MC has to get through ans then the ending) and the chapter is already at 10,000+, I think it will make like 15,000-16,000... how do you split that up?

also worth noting that some of the most famous "fanfics with the serial numbers filed off" were alternate universe, like 50 shades. the only thing the fanfic had in common to begin with was names and personalities. which is very different from writing in the same world.

There are some absolute masterpiece fanfictions out there and the author will never make a dime. Unless they want to fall into that category or the dangerous territory of “you literally ripped off Star Wars” in which case Disney will square up and squash you and not back down until you scream, I’d say don’t be afraid to let your idea cook in your mind, write for yourself first and deliberately find all the blatant cross overs and change them
