No one enjoys looking at soulless buildings. But I think it’s important to remember that what counts as ‘ugly’ is subjective, and controlling architecture too tightly risks stifling creativity. Freedom to experiment with designs many people dislike is what lets art and culture evolve, including in architecture. In a way, allowing unconventional or even controversial buildings is part of protecting 1st amendment freedom of expression. After all, architecture is one of the most visible forms of art in public life

So, I agree with you that mandating these standards is wrong. But I disagree on every instance of which option is "more attractive"!

the worst part is that ODS/form-based codes were intended to fix and streamline traditional zoning and instead they've just added on another layer of pain.

I would also argue that a big reason everything is ugly and cheap these days is that suburban sprawl, by design, spreads out all the wealth of any given region. Concentrated wealth will build a nicer town than wealth that’s being stretched thin.

Architects want to design so many beautiful, useful, sustainable structures but they literally can’t!!

I’m pretty sure that the design standards my own LA County city approved after my new townhouse was built 3 years ago, would have made our townhouse design illegal to build today! Our front doors don’t have enough of an awning!

My city requires at least 80% of a building’s exterior to be brick. Which sounds like a reasonable thing if we’re talking about town houses, but it also applies to high rises with 25+ levels. We don’t have any modern glass office buildings but we do have a number of post-nuclear apocalypse looking monoliths

If you make building fashion standards standard, you end up with multiple decades of out of fashion buildings

That’s my state. Making it ugly as well as more expensive. We need three or four factories making standardized cheap five over ones like liberty ships. Khrushchevkas by the thousands. If you only have to pay 10% of your wages in rent, they sure start looking a lot nicer.

I'm an architecture student and lemme tell you, if you got a problem with how shit looks. don't point (many) fingers at us, point them at your local governments and 'community groups'

Disagree on which is ugly on all of your comparisons, which is an obvious example of ugly is subjective.
