I had a hand puppet one day. When high school students weren’t working, the puppet got close to them, looked at them, looked at the work they didn’t do, and back at them. I didn’t say anything. Kids got back to work.

also hit them with unadulterated ego. tell them you're smarter than all the science teachers. tell them you're sorry they aren't as pretty as you are. accuse them of being jealous of your swagger. Gen z and ESPECIALLY Gen alpha has no defense against it

I once had a student bring a paper mache mask that he proceeded to stab with a pencil repeatedly while whispering to himself in another language and make look like something from hell… I fear I cannot stoop to a weirder level than that.

It works! Not just in a crowd control way, but in an engagement way, too. Kids feel way more comfortable and relaxed and willing to participate. You take the spotlight away from them and they feel a little less judgmental/self conscious. Plus it makes them realize that being weird isn’t as bad or world ending as they think it is. 😊 It works for me every time.
