Vinland Saga (Japanese: ヴィンランドサガ, English: Vinland Saga) is a Japanese historical manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura. The manga is published by Kodansha and first appeared in the weekly magazine Weekly Shonen Magazine, aimed at young adults, before moving to the monthly magazine Monthly Afternoon, aimed at young adult men. A total of 29 volumes have been published. Vinland Saga is officially published in Ukraine by Nasha Idea. The name Vinland Saga evokes associations with Vinland, as described in two Scandinavian sagas. However, Vinland Saga takes place in Danish-controlled England in the early 11th century, and features Danish invaders of England, commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatization of the historical rise to power of King Canute the Great with a plot of revenge, centered on historical researcher Thorfinn, the son of a murdered former warrior. Yukimura, inspired by King Olaf Tryggvason of Norway, decided to write the Vinland Saga as a story about slavery. Yukimura's editor was against Thorfinn being a slave from the beginning, so he was made a Viking. The author agreed because he wanted Thorfinn to understand the tragedy he caused as a Viking. Yukimura's experiences during the Cold War and the September 11 attacks were reflected in the character of Thorfinn, who is traumatized by his actions as a warrior and therefore decides to find Vinland to create a land where people of different races can peacefully coexist. As of August 2022, the circulation of Vinland Saga has exceeded 7 million copies. The manga won the Grand Prix at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2009. It won the 36th Kodansha Manga Award for Best Overall Manga in 2012. A 24-episode anime adaptation by Wit Studio aired on NHK General TV from July to December 2019. A second season, animated by MAPPA, premiered on Tokyo MX and BS11 in January 2023. The manga has received widespread acclaim, with some critics praising the mix of violent and calm stories, as well as Yukimura's artwork. #anime #sagavinland #saga #vinland #berserk #reallife
