I am a hospice caregiver and have 25yrs exp. If you can afford a facility you can afford at home caregivers. Trust me.

There are only 2 options where a person will get the care they need and deserve . 1- keep them at home. Wich is almost impossible when you have no choice but to work. Or 2- a privite place that charges an obscene amount of money. Also an impossibility for most peopl. So either way, if your not rich you're sol. This is a sad world we live in.😟😡

Also ask about how many patients does one caregiver have? So many folks that are in Assisted Living need more care.

Assisted living is NOT able to meet the needs of our loved ones with dementia.

i work in an ALF in memory care and its really concerning how unregulated these facilites are. they arent being taken care of by nurses or even CNA’s, but the problem isnt the workers its the system. its the upper mangement selling these places and setting unrealistic standards to the families when all they care about is the census. if they arent making enough money/have enough residents, our staffing gets cut in half! this is bad for staffing AND the residents arent recieving the care they need. after working there i would never put my family in a ALF. its not regulated at all.

Don’t schedule a tour. Just show up unannounced because then you can really see anything they won’t have time to hide.

I highly highly recommend skipping an assisted living with a memory care unit. They aren’t trained. They watch a handful of videos and that’s it. As a cna- find a ltc where he can progress in his dementia. Because the sooner he gets a familiar routine with his nursing staff the easier it will be for him as he needs more care. Other questions to ask while touring- how many CNA’s to residents. Anything more than 1 cna to 10 residents and his care will be lacking. (Esp as he progresses) ask to see the linen cart, the supply closets. If it’s looking empty, odds are he’s going to have skin breakouts and more issues hygiene wise. Try and tour during busy times (10-2). Honestly- stop and ask a resident in the hallways their thoughts on the place. Ask about the training staff receives too! Be nosy, check out how the CNAs interact with each other. Also- if you see barely any staff on the floor or if there are lights blinking and beeping like it’s a Christmas show- RUN. Checking their indeed page and reading their little comment page is also suppppper helpful.

locking doors is for the residents safety. I can't imagine how awful it would be for someone with dementia to think someone else's room was their home and the strange lady in bed asleep was their wife. if you haven't actually worked in LTC then you don't know how bad it can get, especially with people who suffer from dementia.

ever consider bringing him home and hiring a caregiver? I guarantee it's a lot cheaper than $10k/mo... even for a nurse!

I am in the same boat. You are not alone - one comment stuck out to me on here - it said if you can afford memory care you can afford at home care - that comment is making me rethink things.

I think they locked some of the doors when they’re not in the rooms because the other residents steal from them. My grandfather has dementia and is always ending up with things that don’t belong to him so maybe ask why they lock the doors when they’re not in the room.

I would highly suggest a private HOME, with 4-5 residents for a place. The bigger places 🤨👎👎👎

I work in an assisted living that had a memory care and our families have preferences if doors are locked are not. We have some wanderers so most family do like having the doors locked. We leave it up to the families. Our residents don’t have keys but most of them can ask if they need to use the restroom or they want to go to their rooms. But we keep ours engaged every half hour with activties so it is usually not a problem to keep them engaged. The only thing I ask is if you are putting your loved on especially with memory impairments in a residence ask if they have a history thing you can fill out so that they can learn as much as they can about your loved one, and give the staff some time to learn your loved ones routine it does take a while.

Based on Regs in some states assisted living facilities cannot lift a Resident up off the floor. They have to get up on their own or EMS has to be called. This is because they do not staff nurses 24 hours a day

as someone who is currently taking care of my Mil 24 7 with Alzheimer's at home with little help. this is what I do. I do respite once a month in the nursing home for a week to regroup. doing it all myself it hard!!! yes it is expensive but she and I need little vacations. I know at some point we may not be able to do this later on down the line but for now it is working for us. also here we have the options of in home healthcare to come in and we can pay them for as many hours we need too.
