I've said it since like 2012. the tea party is was basically a proto-fascist movement. every tea partier i knew was like the guy in the Mehdi Hasan Jubilee video. they genuinely don't think dems can do what rs can and they basically don't care for democracy.

As for whether it’s a political religion, the whole chicken and egg of American dominant religion stood out to me most when I read Jesus and John Wayne. There’s this cycle of right-wing religious leaders showing up to say what the powerful want to hear and then the powerful funding them. The pastors draw in new people with the right-wing politics while it then drives out everyone else. The religion just becomes a Christianized version of right wing beliefs that serves the powerful, and then grows the politics. They’re so deeply intertwined in the history of the States, which makes sense since there’s never been full control over the myriad worldviews that show up here. That 30% has to represent other sociological phenomena going on in a nation where there’s always been a fight for the dominant worldview among a society built on everyone out for themselves.
