Grew up 4th generation Church of Christ. I remember being terrified at 9 that I was going to hell. It is 100% abusive to teach a child that they are inherently evil and unless they conform to religious expectations they’re going to be forever cut off from their family and tortured. I’m finally breaking that generational curse now that I’m raising children of my own.

I remember in the awana program I told someone I didn’t know if I knew how to believe. And they took me in a room and prayed over me and told me about hell and demons etc and it scared me so bad

One of the few very good things to come out of being raised JW - is their belief that hell does not exist. That’s been a huge relief in my decinstructing, adult life.
