I had a young person who was constantly being asked/told to take the next run, there wasn't anyone else, it shouldn't take too long. I coached them to say, I don't mind being asked to take this run, but I will not be taking every run. Be prepared for my being unavailable later.

Yeah I'm doing that now, "here's all the things that I'm being asked to do, I can't work on 8 things simultaneously, tell me which one or two are a priority and be aware what is falling through because of that". We ended up agreeing on picking a main topic for a week and making really good progress on it, and planning a couple weeks ahead to align with the rest of the team. I get some stuff done on the side but I don't promise it. I learned the hard way that I have to manage my workload really strictly, because otherwise I will burn out and nothing will be done.
