Nunu the dusky headed conure had a problem that sadly isn’t uncommon in captive parrots. She self mutilated through plucking out her feathers. There can be many reasons for this, so always check with your avian vet in case the underlying cause is more serious. In Nunu’s case it was due to anxiety, loneliness, and lack of proper care. This does not mean an owner is bad or failing if their bird plucks. Most are trying their best with little to no education on caring for these exotic animals. I started out this way and learned how to give her the life and care she deserves over time. Things that helped her improve were, switching to a pelleted diet and a vegetable chop (Which isn’t easy to get a bird to do! Always consult a vet when switching diets, birds can starve themselves if they aren’t used to the new food.), giving her a bed time that allowed her 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep, spending more time with her outside the cage, making sure she always had natural toys that were safe and easy to shred, putting on nature sounds or shows when I left the house, and stopping interactions that triggered hormonal behavior in her (i.e. petting her on the body). All these helped, but she didn’t fully stop for a long time. Finally, I realized she was probably lonely. Even if I gave her 4 hours a day sometimes, I imagined if that’s all the interaction I ever got. We finally decided it was time for a friend. It’s usually not ideal or very safe to have birds be cage mates, so the new bird we got just lived in the same room as her. They could always see each other and they interacted outside of the cage. This was how we decided to get Kuzco! Our indian ring neck. They aren’t best friends by any means but they get along, and it helped Nunu to just have another bird present. Sometimes we have to empathize with our animals heavily to find solutions. I hope this helps anyone who may have a plucking bird! P.S. getting another bird is not a guaranteed solution to this problem. There is a very real chance the birds may not get along, or even hate each other. Always get a bird with the intention that you will love and care for them first, not just to fix a problem.
