President-elect Donald Trump has named Lee Zeldin, a Trump ally who represented part of Long Island in the U.S. House from 2015 to 2023, as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Zeldin, an attorney who served in the U.S. Army, “will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet,” Trump said in a statement. “He will set new standards on environmental review and maintenance that will allow the United States to grow in a healthy and well-structured way.” In a post on social media, Zeldin pledged to “restore U.S. energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs and make the U.S. the global leader of AI. We will do so while protecting access to clean air and water.” The role is a Cabinet-level position that requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate. During his first two years in the House, Zeldin served on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and its subcommittee on railroads, pipelines, and hazardous materials. In 2018, after then-President Trump https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/articles/president-trump-announces-u-s-withdrawal-paris-climate-accord/ his intention to leave the Paris Climate Accord, Zeldin https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2018-04-25/rep-zeldin-says-u-s-should-be-willing-to-decertify-iran-deal-video he did not agree with international calls for the U.S. to rejoin the deal “as it currently stands.” He cited “other countries that are contributing to very adverse impacts on our climate, but not having the level of responsibility that they need to have in stepping up and making a positive change within their own countries.” The Biden administration later rejoined the deal. A few months before announcing his run for New York governor in 2021, Zeldin https://www.facebook.com/LeeMZeldin/posts/pfbid0szRzFG1dCp97bvWEBhTE7CV7R2MZoPLJ62VjcqGwPfZLzhNMQvPGYgzomjJDPtcKl the Biden White House for planning to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline “and the tens of thousands of jobs and energy independence that come with it” and for rejoining the Paris climate agreement “without holding bad actors like China accountable.” Zeldin lost the race to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2022. #trump #trumpappointee #trumpadministration #donaldtrump #trumpnews #pbsnews #newshour #leezeldin #newyorkrep #environmentalprotection #epa #environment
