Whoever called you "too woke" for calling out the queer evil villain archetype, teach them about "Hays Code". This is deeper than han it might look on the surface.

i refuse to watch/listen to hamilton if i can help it so obv i dont have all the info but from the comments on the last video my thoughts went to: are we *really* that far removed from the flamboyant queer coded villain stereotype? if removed at all?

I'd want to add that they never treated the relationship Hamilton and Laurens had, was heavily snowed over despite its longitude compared to Hamilton's affair with Maria Reynolds. To the point of Laurens letter of death not being on the soundtrack

My issue with Hamilton is that Hamilton is the villain in actual history. Burr was a war hero and forced into a horrible position by the US government and was framed for it. The founders wrote parts of the constitution to protect the country from Hamilton taking power.

Nobody is arguing that Groff isn’t campy or sassy. The question is whether that equals queer or not. And the way that it’s done really doesn’t read queer to most people. Same applies to Jefferson in act 2. He hops around in What Did I Miss, but why is that queer-coded? Hamilton does the same earlier in the show. Burr doesn’t do anything clearly queer-coded in The Room Where it Happens either. He’s just dancing. There’s nothing in his actions or dialogue that read queer either.

From an English perspective, his performance always came off as akin to a pantomime dame or panto villain tbh, which I think very much works when you’re depicting and insulting a very English villain, but I also don’t trust Lin Manuel Miranda to deliberately direct like that and Joff is American. Some of the mannerisms and also kinda frothing at the mouth just reminds me of panto.
