As a person who lived in Korea for 2 years,I constantly blamed myself that I dont seem to enjoy Korea, while others dreaming about coming there. But I just couldn’t explain how suffocated I felt, surrounded by people who are materialistic, obsessed with income and group people by their classification in society. Friendship, love even day to day conversations all seem superficial and you feel like people constantly try to prove others that they r beautiful, handsome, worthy or rich.

It doesn't come as a surprise. As an outsider looking in, SK society appears full of fakeness, trend-obsession and self-loathing.

Malaysia more likely one of the most comfortable country cause we focused more on family, FOODS & be happy HAHAHAHHAHA. Anyways food is still important. You had a bad day? Make up? No, it’s a food. You wanna cry? Grab some food first. Come back home & eat a delicious food with your fam

I'm currently living in South Korea and getting ready to move. I've said for a while that SK is a country that wants to glitter but definitely isn't gold. Coming to work and live here was like having a beautiful apple, biting, and finding thats its rotten inside. Even as an American, it feels incredibly vain and like everyone is just posturing.

it's just a poverty mindset - if you struggled to get money, it becomes the most important thing. Here in Ireland, its housing. We're obsessed with home security as we have a history of being dispossessed by English landlords. And currently it's beyond lots of peoples' reach due to lack of supply (no social housing, no one building since the crash). Every country had its "thing" 🙄

Japan and SK are the two countries I could never have a corporate job in. I'd go insane.

I'm Korean who moved to another country when I was young. I honestly don't think I'd be as happy as I am today if I still stayed in the society of keeping up with the joneses and constantly comparing whose numbers are higher. I feel bad for the people who never got to experience the world outside of that society.

I don’t think calling Korea a “toxic society” is fair. Our hardworking culture is one of the main reasons we achieved such fast economic growth and global influence in just a few decades. It’s not just about money – it’s about responsibility for family and the future. Also, every country has its own kind of pressure. The U.S., Japan, and China all have intense work cultures too. Korea is changing a lot as well – younger generations value work-life balance and personal happiness more than before. Calling it “toxic” ignores the positive sides of our culture like safety, strong community, and world-class innovation.

Yes, there are parts to South Korea that are this way. But I think by generalizing we’re hurting the genuinely kind and family oriented older generations living there, as well as young people who feel the same way you do but are “trapped” by the societal norms and expectations. I think a dramatic societal shift of perspective is needed, but it’s unfair to label all of Korea as “toxic”

Same here. It just makes me so sad when I try to explain to Koreans around me how much better life can be outside of this country, and no one seems to get it. I feel this deep sadness whenever I see someone who simply couldn’t afford, or didn’t have the emotional capacity, to be kind to others, just because life here is so stressful. It’s like… this isn’t how humans are meant to live. We weren’t made for this.

You seem like a deep soul, trapped in a materialistic society. I don’t know if it will bring you any comfort, but just know that it’s the same everywhere. The average human is like a programme. They aren’t awake, they are just tuned into a system and call it life. They don’t seek deeper meaning because it’s not part of their being. They care about the nice car, what their bank balance looks like or social clout on the internet. My advice is honestly - spend less time online and learn to find comfort in solitude and with what brings you peace.

I went to SK and talked to a pharmacist there. He is still single and planned to move to Malaysia and settle down here. SK is too expensive, too materialistic and if you dont make enough you will be looked down. I felt sad for him.. it is not always greener elsewhere but i dont think in my country we are that materialistic. We dont mind wearing unbranded items or drive big cars..

perhaps it stems from it's history. since SK was so poor after the Japanese occupation etc I imagine people were left with the mentality of "gathering" as much as possible because of the scarcity they went through. and they passed that to their kids/grandkids. idk. Just a theory

I am currently living in korea with my husband and 2 babies and the only thing that makes our life hard it’s the lack of understanding for people who have a family in the work place. Impossible overworking hours that makes our time together at a maximum of 1 hour a day…
