I became a warrant. So when someone warns you “being an officer is political,” they’re reminding you that beyond the formal duties of the job, you’ll have to build relationships, managing perceptions, and shaping policy,if you want to get things done. In my opinion this is good place to be, because you have a olace at the table to influence in a positive manner changes that may need to be made.

It who you know, or who you align with. For instance, as a CPT looking for promotion to MAJ you'll need to serve in staff position/ Co. CMD; if you're in your CMF you'll want to be in S3 (operations) because you're a SME. You will seldom pick S1, S4, S2 (unless you are already that CMF). If your BN CDR don't deal with you; you'll find your journey will be difficult regardless of the regulatory guidance you may abide by.

Being an officer you have to navigate and know that the chain of command is political. You have to read rooms, manage perceptions, know when to speak and when to stay silent. It’s often more “Game of Thrones” than “Call of Duty.” Success isn’t just about being tactically proficient it’s about influence and optics. Officer promotion boards aren’t just merit-based they’re shaped by institutional needs, optics and race/gender politics. Mentorship matters. Officers don’t just “follow orders”you interpret them, implement them, and often provide feedback up the chain. That feedback is political. Your reports, your words, your silence those shape policy.

E7 and up is political. Just means the way you handle business and conduct yourself is a little more scrutinized.

It’s not. It may seem that way to junior Soldiers because they are not aware of the issues, policies, and decisions thay govern life in the Army at the Company level and above.

It mean that your entire life will be driven by protocol. Officer politics have created an environment where while you don't want to be the worst as that brings eyes on you, But, you also aren't rewarded for being innovative and trying to be the best as that will make you a threat thus a target. So Officers do this race to the middle. Like a political figure you don't want to do to much or to little. You will be micro managed and then will be expected to micromanage. It's a complete failure of how it was intended to be. But it is what it is.

Being an officer is political bc you are the “face” of the _____ (PLT, CO, BN). You have to be the Moral Compass, Mr./Mrs. Right all of the time. You have to be personally tactful and be able to see the larger & smaller picture at the same time. How can you communicate a message down from higher to the lowest level. And how can you sit at a big table and “win” for your unit? And you’ll have to make decisions that are best for the unit not necessarily the individual. You have to campaign for your unit and find ways to highlight them and take them to new heights. “Political” is often used in a negative connotation (it can be with a toxic person), but it can also be positive. You can take the unit/personnel to new heights and that’s rewarding.

It doesn't get political until you are in command of a large unit. So in the Navy a ship, squadron, etc. In the beginning it's just about knowing your job and taking care of subordinates.

what they mean is... sometimes your performance isnt most important.
Think of it this way, in every interaction you have, you leave those involved with a "feeling". that feeling is more powerful than the metrics of your performance in the senior ranks.

Kind of like being a recruiter, being likable, shaking the right hands, networking with the right people, kissing babies, know how to brief and knowing your stuff at all times, reading the room, knowing when to hush etc

Warrant is more of your job/niche/MOS & only that. You’re considered the SME for that role only.

I would go warrant if I wanted to still be in but political is basically having to move a certain way to gain “favoritism.” From those above you to help you promote to the higher level. It’s all about ratings & TIG on the officer

the main reason is because all Leadership, Enlisted and Officers are rated against each other. The military only has a certain amount of slots, so they promote the best of the best. So you're rated against your piers

All ranks are political. Still, you are a walking billboard for the mission, your branch, fitness, standards, leadership, and personal advancement. And that’s not even touching on the biases in how people are interviewed….

Being an officer requires a higher level of commitment. Because there is a pecking order in every battalion and company you need to have an insatiable attitude to be the best faster. The commissioned avenue does require you to exercise diplomacy and learn government. Networks are essential. Building bridges are gateways for what’s next. I would tell you that if you’re a self starter and self motivated, you’re a good candidate.

IMO, political is the wrong word. I have heard this and I can say, I have achieved the rank of LTC, commanded an Artillery Battalion and I don’t believe I am political. What changes is that as you move up in rank, relationships matter and your reputation matters. You will rely on sponsorship more and become a mentor versus a mentee. People will watch your every move. But with growth of social media, anyone in uniform is being watched. Just my two cents.

Short answer, your reputation precedes you. Just like being an NCO however, as an officer once you mess it up, you may never get the chance fix it.
