@cbsmornings: Tortoises may have a tough shells, but new research shows they can feel emotions like optimism and anxiety. Scientists found that tortoises in enriched environments were more curious and made more optimistic choices during cognitive tests. #tortoise #study #emotions #anxiety
I always find it hilarious when we are surprised other animals have feelings

I think we all could have guessed that they were anxious little critters

And they can be evil and angry (I worked with tortoise, he would try to break out of enclosure and if you moved them too much they would remember and hiss at you)

It’s sad we have to prove that other animals feel emotions like us in order to respect living creatures.

I guess that only people that are not really know or pay attention to their animals are the ones that do not realize that animals have emotions and thoughts. Some animals can plan plan logically.

To everyone saying this is obvious, as a scientist, we need to have studies like things to quantifiably prove things! And not every animal experiences emotions certain ways. And there's different levels of emotions. Having research like this helps in terms of having citable evidence for animal advocacy groups

Everyone is going “Lol animals have emotion” but there’s two things: for starters, having *quantified proof* that these animals have emotions is pretty significant in any case, since that can lead to actual legislature. Secondly, anxiety and optimism actually are pretty advanced emotions and confirming their presence in reptiles is pretty significant, it means that tortoises (and likely other reptiles) can *anticipate the future* to some degree, which is like, crazy to think about??? That’s not usually an emotion we attribute to ANY animal and confirming that they can anticipate future events when they’re uncertain is very big.

🙃🥲 how did we not know this?… I had two Russian tortoises and I could tell when my boys were happy or just not feeling it for the day.

y'all, many reptiles do not have the part of your brain that experiences love, so no not all animals have emotions (at least to the same extent that we experience them). Tortoises experiencing emotions IS a discovery because of this. Sincerely, a reptile lover who almost became a herpetologist.

I think it’s safe to assume that all creatures have feelings. We don’t need studies to prove it.
