I’m 38 and used various forms of birth control from age 17-age 37, when I had a bilateral salpingectomy for permanent sterilization. I used pills, ring, patch, hormonal and copper IUD over 20 years. I had a wide range of side effects. I think the bigger issue is all of this is hidden behind multiple doctor appointments, costly prescriptions, and medical gaslighting. A lot of side effects are subjective. Is the nausea and acne from the hormones? Is the depression/anxiety from the pill or other factors? I support women using birth control, I appreciate the fact I fended off pregnancy successfully for 20 years but I absolutely believe my personal experience (and side effects) were valid.

How about we normalize all boys getting the hydrogel injections at puberty and prevent all unwanted pregnancies and not cause any hormonal changes

I’ve been on the pill (continuous usage, skipping placebo pills) for seven years straight because of endometriosis. It is the ONLY thing that has allowed me to physically function with this condition. Sure, some people have side effects, but that happens with literally anything we put into our bodies (meds, foods, etc). People really need to do real research and talk to professionals instead of demonizing an amazing thing that helps so many people.

I wonder if some of this is also rooted in the mistrust of the pharmaceutical industry. A distrust that is fair, I think. But then the distrust becomes more important to people than the science. And social media becomes an echo chamber of that distrust and misinformation.

There’s a lawsuit happening as we speak from the shot. You are not supposed to be on it for more then a few years because in can weaken bones and my doctor had me on it for 7 years. I don’t think it’s crazy to be worried.

I’ve been on birth control for 16 years. I never had negative side effects. On the contrary, it’s improved my quality of life and stabilized my hormone disorder. It also made my periods less painful. It’s given me a great quality of life!

This uptick in people following the "advice" from an influencer over the advice from a doctor is wild.

The laundry list of side effects of birth control and the women who experience are absolutely ignored. Hormones affect the whole body!! It can cause weight gain, mental health issues, headaches and acne. Some of the symptoms don’t go away. 50 lbs is NOT MINOR WEIGHT GAIN 😭 I have taken almost every birth control available for the past 20 years and a hysterectomy at 32. I could be a piece of science to figure it out

it’s been crazy to witness the villainizing of birth control over the years. I’m not going to dismiss any of the rare and scary side effects that have happened to people but continuous birth control has been such an important part of my life. and there’s always risk with every medication

I do think that it is important to recognize that when it comes to symptoms from birth control women are very often ignored by their doctors and told they have no other choice. Other than that I am very thankful for birth control because well I can no longer take it it was very effective for me when I was younger

Gotta follow the money and their associations. How many people actually follow these influencers vs see their promoted content? Who is paying them or what extremist views do they secretly subscribe to? Misinformation originally being pushed by far right religious groups.

this is real and also I consistently see media like this and the media that's being critiqued missing a much larger valid point - ppl are often not getting the repro care that they need bc of medical misogyny, racism, transphobia, ableism, etc. I come from a family with a lot of reproductive issues and difficulties with birth control, and those experiences of pain, disease, adverse med effects can still be real while we are validating the medical safety and importance of birth control access. conservatives are using this to invalidate mainstream reproductive care writ large, and liberal media is responding to the very tip of this iceberg without exploring the reasons it has become an appealing talking point to say bc is unsafe in the first place. its not bc birth control is inherently unsafe, its bc most medical practitioners do not take the pain of marginalized ppl seriously. if we want to combat this misinformation, we need to go deeper than just "birth control is scientifically validated", it is, but that's just the surface level argument, not the core of the issue.

Women being told we need to listen to doctors and researchers when they 1. Don’t listen to us 2. Get very little funding for women’s research. Not saying the influence are right but it’s hard to believe the other side as well. So here we are in the middle holding the bag having to decide for ourselves and will be blamed if we choose wrong. Hey, but we had a good Barbie summer that one time…

My birth control is the only thing that helps with my PCOS. Without it, my period comes about every 4 months and increases my risk for cancer and cysts (which I just had surgery for)

Ok but feeling like hormonal birth control isn’t good for everyone isn’t anti feminist. It negatively affects a lot of women, and the onus should not only be on us to find birth control methods other than barriers
