The story as presented is very sensationalized and misleading. What they’re doing is transplanting the nucleus of one egg cell into another egg cell with the nucleus removed and then fertilizing that egg. That’s completely different from gene editing, which is what would be required to create designer babies. Technically complicated but not sci-fi.

The mitochondria has its own DNA because it used to be a form of bacteria before it joined the first animal/plant cells. Mitochondrial DNA is ONLY passed on from the mother. So if mom one has a mitochondrial issue, mom 2 can pass on her mitochondrial DNA instead.

This is a huge step in genetic mutations, if we can stop the disease before it starts, we can cut it out completely. So many ethical & scientific questions to go along with that but it’s definitely a step

I did research on this in college, this could be a ethical issue because once the baby grows up it may have certain health issues later in life and may have bad mental health issues due to the fact that child wont have anyone to relate to.
