The thing people don’t understand is that there is no ‘why’ in this case. It was just a cold, senseless killing. there was no motive behind it. That’s why Bryan Kohberger refuses to give a statement or answer any questions. He wants to exploit this even further. He wants to appear mysterious, but in the end, it was just a shallow, senseless, and empty act. He’s scared to admit it, because once he does, people will forget about him.

For those confused about the money penalties: The main purpose is any money he has sent to him by family, weirdos that idolize people like him, etc. goes to the state until the total balance is paid. That means until he has a quarter million put into his account he gets $0 of it that can be used for commissary. The judge is basically making a statement that he doesn't even want him to have the comfort items available to buy in prison. As for the civil side. This would also be garnished from commissary. It goes to the family to pay for funeral expenses, lost wages, etc. I am speculating because I don't know the law or precedent on the value but I believe it is $5,000 becuase that is the max you can get in Idaho for small claims. I would imagine the judge did this to expedite the family having the ability to collect those funds because he could do it right then and there at sentencing. If the family wanted a larger settlement they would have to open their own civil cases and end up in court again probably years from now. Yes the money he loses goes to the state, but this is less about recouping money for the investigation and more about making life as hard for Kohberger as the judge has the ability to do. In short, well done judge.

personally I'd feel insulted to recieve $5000 for the death of my child. Either don't offer payment or pay in the millions even though there's no price worth receiving when you've lost a child.
