I believe this!! My gf is a teacher and she gives no hw. She only assigns "hw" if a child doesn't finish their work in class to finish it at home and bring it back the next day. School time is for class and she thinks after school time is time for friends, family, and hobbies for kids

my mom's a retired teacher she gave an amount to reasonably get done in class and they behaved better. And they're kids, they should get to be kids while they can outside school time.

I took 2 yrs of Spanish in HS, just did worksheets most of the time. teacher never made us actual talk in Spanish so all I know now is what I have learned from others by them teaching me how to speak it

I think the biggest mistake here is valuing all homework equal. There's a big difference between giving 50 math problems as homework and giving 3. I also think that "No Homework" has ruined English classes. if you can't assign reading at home, you have to do it in class, which leaves less time for discussion and application or critical thinking skills. obviously nothing is perfect, but our scores aren't really going up even if we take away homework.

Homework for my class is only if you don't finish your work in class. I don't like giving homework because I feel it takes away from extracurricular activities that help drive students' passion.

math was my worst subject in high school. for one of my math classes, the teacher assigned homework everyday. the caveat being you only did homework until it made sense. it wasn't graded. you could turn it in everyday and he would grade it or if you grasped the concepts in class you didn't need to do homework that night. that is the first and only time I ever got an A in math. And I feel like for him it made it easier too. instead of grading 30 students homework assignments every single day, he's only grading the few that turn in homework because they need help. and he would set time aside to go over it with you personally in class. homework should be provided as a guide and a tool but it shouldn't be graded.

imagine wanting teenagers to do sports and get jobs but then also piling 4 hours of homework on top of them too

my favorite class in school gave 10 minutes a day to work on homework and you only had to do it at home if you didn't finish it in class. homework was only homework if you needed more time.

Even if there was no negative correlation to the education the fact that it is diminishing time that can be spent as a family, as between school and work that time is often so precious and little, should be enough to eliminate it.

I would think it'd make more sense to have homework as extra credit and for those that want/need the extra practice.
it never made sense to me to get homework, do it thinking im doing it right for hrs then come to school and turned out I was doing it wrong the whole time

When I was in school the only homework we had was if we didn’t finish something in class or like if there was a big paper due but we also had a lot of class time to work on those things as well. Don’t remember ever being assigned homework for the sake of homework. Now a days tho it seems kids are given homework just for the sake of giving them more work to do once home. Which I think is kind of nuts.

Yeah I can confirm, as a college educated success story, and homework survivor. I never did it. Not once. And. I’ll raise my daughter to not do the same. Vive la revolution!

when I was 12-13, in 6th grade, my teacher asked to see my parents to discuss the SAT scores. she told my mom that i was scoring at a college level, but was really irritated that I would hardly ever turn in my homework. my mom told her if my test scores weren't lacking then her homework shouldn't matter. then the teacher understood my attitude towards her.

I found in my college classes that the best ones were the ones where we did the homework in lectures. we had assigned portions and then taught the homework to one another and the professor gave an overall teaching of the whole subject and that made me learn much better

This is why I give one homework assignment a week in my maths classes. They also get an entire class to work on it, work with their classmates, and ask me questions about it. If they don't finish it in that class time, they then have homework.

I would not have graduated high school with a 3.something gpa if homework was the key to success the only homework I ever did was papers and projects. Also, the year my school district trialed a program of smaller classes sizes, magically I was on honor roll most of the year. Only ran that one year though because it was “too expensive”
