This was casual dinner-talk in my house. I told my friend about it and he started crying uncontrollably (he was seven and his family wasn’t religious). My parents praised me for “witnessing” to him. If I ever meet him again, he’s getting a hug and an apology.

Yeah, I became very interested in the end times stuff when I was kind of college age, but my interest started very quickly to take a turn into the house flood it was. And eventually, I was convinced that it was a load of BS even though I was at church going in person. I realized it was not something that really came from the Bible.

Whenever I had a nightmare about the rapture, it made my parents so mad. They insisted that i needed to be excited about it happening. I stopped telling them when i had nightmares because it wasn’t worth the gaslighting

I had a high school friend with a bumper sticker that said “In case of rapture, this car will be unmanned” 🤦🏼♀️

I got convinced as a child by this argument that "a day is as a thousand years" so naturally it would be at y2k because the tribulation is followed by the 1000 year millennial kingdom which would match the Sabbath after the six days...idk I was like 10 when I heard it. I was 25 before it really occurred to me that it really wasn't happening

It wasn’t just in the 80’s and 90’s - the belief still persists. I still hear conversations around me, from people I know, trying to see the signs of the times. Looking for the antichrist and the mark of the beast. Trying to guess how and when the rapture will happen. Unknowing anything about the theology and how it came to be in the first place. I was one of them, once. But I feared it. I didn’t look forward to it like some.

Core memory: 5 years old in Sunday school class before church (dad was pastor) praying that it’d happen before I turned 12 (innocence lost) because I knew I wouldn’t go, (already saw the bible didn’t make sense) so if he didn’t come before then, please wait until I had grown & gotten married & had kids. And then thought I’d be Sarah Conner fighting the Mark of the Beast. TRAUMA-TIZED!!

My parents would pull rapture "dry runs" by hiding in the closet so we thought they disappeared. 😩 My therapy bill is huge

At summer camp as a teen they had us play this game called Persecution. The counselors would hunt the campers (the Christians), and take them to "prison". It was to teach you to stay strong and not turn your back on God, even when your freedom and life was on the line. Had to be prepared because they were just as concerned about Christians being hunted down before and after the rapture.

I was taught the rapture would happen when no one was expecting it, so i would try to constantly think about it to ensure it wouldn’t happen because i wasn’t ready to go yet because i still wanted to live my life🫠

Left Behind is a rom com compared to the Thief in the Night trilogy we had to watch, to the soundtrack of Larry Norman singing I Wish We’d All Been Ready.

I grew up with “The rapture is coming any day now” and now I’ll wake up panicked in the middle of the night when I hear a loud car pass by convinced that it’s the horns of the rapture 🥲 Anyway…religious trauma is crazy 😭

I remember reading a library book that gave various eschatological views in my teens and it made me not believe the rapture. I was at odds with most people

And then when you were thinking about the rapture happening and you knew that it couldn’t happen right in the moment because no man knows the day or the hour so if you are always thinking it will happen right in that moment you knew it wouldent because you were thinking about it… man that was exhausting.

THIS! And the skits where they made us teens believe we had been left behind bc we were sinners. Also don't forget we WERE going to be persecuted and possibly shot for being a Christian and you NEEDED to be ready for that bc your faith should be strong enough to die for.
