In the 1980s and ’90s, the same kids who used to steal Ralph Lauren made it iconic. Not the Ivy League—the hood. Crews like the Lo-Lifes flipped the brand into street culture, turning preppy into a flex. But let’s be clear: Ralph Lauren—born Ralph Lifshitz—a Jewish designer from the Bronx, wasn’t designing for Black or Brown people when he created the brand. He was building an aspirational image rooted in elite whiteness: Ivy League, country clubs, yachts. The Polo lifestyle wasn’t inclusion—it was exclusion. And we were never the intended audience. Still, the hood took it. Not because we were invited, but because we knew how to make it ours. And now—decades later—we’re still pouring into fashion houses that were never made with us in mind. No matter how beautiful the collection is, constant support for non-Black-owned brands is not the move. At some point, you have to ask: What are you really investing in? Aesthetic? Or systems that keep Black designers underfunded, underrepresented, and unprotected…

Im sorry, it isn't me, but every time they say HBCU, they always mention the same schools: Morehouse, Spellman, Howard, Tuskegee, and FAMU. There are so many other great HBCUs that could be branded like these. The other HBCUs have great histories just like these schools.

So now we're not only allowing people to make money off our culture, were celebrating and supporting it? Would it not have been better for RL to sponsor the Black brands you mentioned, let them release collections with the strength of Polo branding supporting them while still allowing the Black brands you mentioned to get the exposure? It would have been a win for everyone.
