There was a clip I saw on social media once of security footage when hospital maternity ward was experiencing an earthquake I think. ALL of the men ran toward the exits while women were coming from areas outside the immediate area to come GRAB THE BABIES in bassinets. They were running out with two or three babies each. I think you are zeroing in on several factors that do contribute to women being casualties of disasters more often than men. Especially in places where women are not viewed to be as valuable as men. 🙄 I would love to learn more about your findings.

the only reason people think the men are protectors with all the courage is because we exist in a patriarchy

There’s also countries where in warmer months men are likely to sleep on the roof of the building, but due to societal norms women can’t. In an earthquake they’re more likely to survive.

Howdy, I’m very interested in learning about your findings. I’m a FF with the DoD and several of us specialize in structural collapse SAR. I’d be interested in bringing this up during training.

This reminded me of the story about Sampoong Department Store I heard on the Rotten Mango Podcast. I’d be curious to know your thoughts on it. Also makes me wonder- is less care generally put into construction of facilities women utilize more than men?

Our bodies are smaller so we are more easily squished? And we are carrying our kids?

Invisible Women book mentions that in some places, women can't leave the home without a male relative or be in a market or a mosque and here the news of impending danger

I heard from a guy who does search and rescue from earthquakes that it's better to lay flat next to your car when on a layered highway. And kids should get next to their desks and not under them.

disaster risk reduction is so important! Risk = (vulnerability x hazard [e.g. - earthquakes])/(capacity)
