I don't think I agree with this. People long for community, but what the mainstream represents isn't community - it's conformity.

I miss the niche tbh, I feel like the last time I experienced it was when I was a teenager in the 2000s engaging in hyper-specific forums. It really felt like you were part of a small community of people. Online spaces feel so huge and broad and mainstream that it's hard to feel part of community, idk

I used to flick on the tv sometimes when I first moved out of home and was feeling a bit lonely and it provided a strange feeling of connectedness, knowing that almost everyone was watching/experiencing the popular show, in their own houses at the same time. Just a curious little thing I’ve noticed is not really there anymore

This actually happened to me. I got into political, philosophy, neuroscience, theology, and psychoanalysis books, podcasts and youtube videos and I can’t relate to normal people anymore. I use AI, books and the virtual world to get my intellectual side met. But it comes at the expense of having less interest in real world interactions. The realm of the digital and the realm of ideas and scientific speculation is much more interesting than the realm of physical social reality space. Its just not satisfying, hello, how are you, how’s the weather. It just feels so hollow.

I mean the Spotify data is bullshit IMO because it’s their algorithms and playlist that consistently push mainstream music. Younger folks might just be more prone to it because they grew up in the music streaming dominant era and don’t know anything else

Yeah men are falling down porn algorithm rabbit holes and now they have warped their brains so bad they’re literally so porn brained they can’t act normal anymore. It’s awful.

What are your thoughts on contemporary counter culture? I was just thinking, what's the equivalent of hippies or punks today? Although niche groups reacting to mainstream culture exist, I haven't noticed any bigger movement in years.

In my opinion, it’s more negative than good. The internet and fandom specifically was always seen as for ‘nerds’. I grew up rurally without internet until early teens and if you had an interest outside of the norm, you just didn’t share it with anyone. And if there was a “mainstream” show, either nobody had the station or their parents wouldn’t let them watch it (The Simpsons for example). I think it’s becoming more normal not to share your interests online anymore either because individuality gets scrutinised or it becomes popular with too many people and they price you out of your own hobbies. (Always happened but now on a larger scale. e.g. labubus)

I think this is why some people have a little bit of 'nostalgia' for COVID times. We all watched Tiger King etc and then made time to discuss it together via Teams the next day.

I love this take! I always tell my friends how much I miss the prevalence of live tv programming vs streaming because of the pop culture moments that came from them. Go to school/work the next day and discuss last nights episode. Sports was one of the few things that kept that consistency. This is why I think reality shows like love island are so popular nowadays.

i’d disagree. mass culture moments were so big in the 2010s so much so that it flattened the internet

This is a great take! I wonder if the spotify change is really a user choice though. I’ve noticed a shift in the music recommended to me the last year or so. If I’m listening to an indie artist, the recommended songs eventually circle back to what’s popular, instead of truly recommending similar.

Speak for yourself, I miss the days of niche forums, videogame communities, imageboards before the popularity and alt right grifter userbase, tumblr, etc. The internet used to be a special separate place with websites unashamedly designed for their specific audience and communities, not to try appeal to everyone. I made a lot of my best friends through those communities, some of which I still talk to very frequently, but I've not felt as connected to online communities because of the mainstreamification of everything in many years.

this reminds me of a concept we studied in a media class I did at uni in 2013 - basically speaking about the concept of people watching shows others were talking about bc they don't want fomo, which lead into how it became disjointed online bc Australia would often be behind on shows (bc we'd get things aired later) and so we'd miss out on online discussions bc of spoilers - this lead to us wanting to get the content at the same time, making piracy increase, which is why it went down when we finally did get Netflix (and ironically, now piracy is up again bc we now are oversaturated w streaming services acting like old paid TV networks). But yeah, went off on a tangent, thought it was similar tho! 😅

that's not to do with a desire to be mainstream, it's the blandness of recommendation algorithms
