I have two VERY similar experiences. First was Taking Abstracr algebra as an undergrad, professor gets up in the middle of final and goes and hits his vape outside for maybe 15-30 minutes then walks back in without a word. Second, walk into my graduate analysis final and professor just says “take it home, cheat, do whatever, it won’t help.” He was very right.

Yep. Open book take home exams were always insanely hard when I was in 4th year. The guy turned up in croquet whites at lectures and played bridge most of the day in the tea room.

In abstract algebra this semester my prof realized his hw was way too hard one week so he spent half of a lecture writing down and talking through the solutions to the problems that week. Even after that I still couldn’t understand them 💀

I've never cheated on a test or exam but it's insane that even with cheating, half the class still failed. Maybe the issue was in his teaching style such that people didn't know what the right answer would've been even with cheating 🤔
