I tell them they can sit wherever, until they can no longer sit wherever. I have had classes that go all year without an assigned seating chart. And some classes get an assigned seating chart day 3. Lol!

I never do a seating chart in the beginning. During the first 2 weeks, I’m watching and tweaking. Moving students and watching.

I try this, but I don’t know their names that soon! The longer I teach, the longer it takes me to learn 125 new names. 😩

I have them, with their parent, decide where they want to sit for the first day of school at meet the teacher. They take a sharpie and write their own name on their name plate- this is also a great way for me to see how they write!!

I sit them in alpha order to facilitate me learning their names and because I remember hearing many years ago that there’s more anxiety for the kids to have to look around for a friend and choose a seat and that it’s more comfortable for them to be told where to sit. I change it up later of course, based on behavior and needs.

I’m thinking about doing this for my secondary kids? Do you think it would work for older kids? I love the idea bc as soon as I do a seating chart I will sit two toxic kids next to each other.

That’s exactly how I do it too. I’ve had classes cry when I make a seating chart because they realize they lost the privilege. I tell them I’m preparing them for college and career readiness. Sitting wherever is a choice not a privilege.

How do you handle that with IEP’s that require preferential seating?

K teacher of 30 years I make a new seating chart based on all your criteria each week. On Friday they can sit where they want. They know I can move anyone at any time. ❤️

For the first few weeks I have to do alphabetical order. I teach 7th grade and the kids are brand new to the school and that helps me learn 150 new names!
