The primary utility of A.I. is to generate content that adds nothing of value, yet attracts the attention. A cognitive fool’s gold generator. Whenever a person might be tempted to use A.I. for something, that is a very strong indicator that it needn’t be done.

even if you're running a very nitty gritty game about the money you have and how you spend it, where a unique listing of items at each shop would be useful, why not just roll on a table? just off the top of my head make a d% table of items weighted towards more common items and roll until the shop seems full

I think a good way to meet this half way is just limiting the price max for shops in certain areas. I don’t want to make a shop inventory for every village, but I do see how it would be cool narratively to limit the selections in places where that would make sense. But god, no. That’s such a waste of time to prep

the "it doesn't add a lot" is the key to me. like if you want that level of immersion as a player.... go play a video game. 🤷♀️

this is what every AI notekeeper/worldbuild app is pushing as a means of making people insecure about their GMing, sh*ts trash

I can't fathom sitting at the table and asking for each store's entire inventory and narrating the party bargain hunting for an entire session

why even waste so much time preparing something that will probably just be a 30 second scene anyway

play Pathfinder 2e, it gives you item prices and item access levels. "this shop has all alchemical items up to level 4" no dumb curation necessary.

Improvising stores is so much more fun.
That's how one DnD world I was running wound up with a store called Victor's enigma, men's lingerie.
someone rolled to look for a useful shop, did poorly, another player called out that name, and suddenly they were in an RP with a silver fox dwarf selling them fine leather goods. 🙂↕️

I do enjoy this for a looting style dungeon crawler. I don't do a lot of looting style dungeon crawlers but when I do, I enjoy it.

Even stories that are specifically written about and set in stores (for example, ‘Mr. Selfridge’ or ‘Are You Being Served?’) don’t tell the audience an exhaustive list of all the unique items available in the shop… It’s a department store, they sell department store stuff. Now, get on with the story.
