In my curse of Strahd campaign, I introduced him to the party the first time after they had a rough fight with some Dire wolves. I let my players all roll to attack first. They of course barely left a dent. Then I took my turn. Leaving the healer alone, I put almost everyone on death saves, but not dead. Just so they can have a single taste of what they’re actually fighting.

My dm has us being followed by a false hydra for a year and half of irl game time, no one caught on but we would trip and fall everyonce in a while, and some of us not being good at notes ended up making it easy. Well flash forward to the end of second half year, we find the lair and it eats a pet of ours and pet tell its owner theres another body in here. We end up killing it and the memories come flooding back, we had a 8th party member in out group who was sent to us as an npc (my sister npc) and the false hydra had eaten her, (she was a bard) the dm explained “thats who was giving you inspiration all this time she was being digested as you guys traveled around”

The entire campaign is a fanfiction based on conspiracy theories about a real life celebrity and they don’t realize it yet. One of the players is a casual fan of this celebrity. I drop lyrics, lore, and easter eggs throughout. All the NPCs are renamed versions of real life celebrities and connected to this one. But 14 sessions in and no one knows… yet!

Moving hedge maze with all sorts of vegetation monsters such as voice acted screaming mushrooms, strangling vines to name a few
Had then burning ANY vegetation they came across after that. see a mushroom? fireball doesn't matter of it was their only 3rd level spell, could not have that screaming happen again

my players failed a mission because one guy didnt believe a group of goblins just wanted to be bakers. so they blew up the backery and killed a lot of innocent goblins and 2 out of 3 of the party. the village nesr by tried to mob the last player but he was able to escape as a peaceful Trent tried to kill the last player. (turned the Trent evil against dwarves as they went back on their deal)

My dm had us on a quest to defeat an evil wizard vampire lord. On our way to him we pass through a village taken over by a zombie plague that’s affected the whole village. After killing 56 out of 100 zombies, my sorcerer noticed that the zombies were bleeding bright red blood. I realized that the zombies were a powerful illusion and the party was killing the living villagers!

One of them wanted an evil arc so led them to kill a pc that wanted to use a character he had to give up in a previous ended campaign and now his current character is being tortured in Hell and the evil arc character helped end the world and killed their favorite npc causing the apocalypse and that was fun

I made a child npc based on my irl trauma, they not only saved him but showered him in gold for a successful future. they did all pull me aside and say hey that plotline was a little to dark for us tho, none of them knew it was about me lol

Had my players build lvl 17 characters off rip and hand me the character sheets to do a look over and never gave them back. I made those characters they made the guardsman to the bbeg they had to get through in order to stop him from from destroying the very fabric of reality of magic to bring his family back that was still alive mind you

I introduced an old woman to a paladin, her son was missing. but the party had a more important mission. the son died. turns out, she adopted the son because she was trying to reform herself from being a night hag. Son died she lost it and for 9 levels she pretended to be his god in his dreams. when he finally did enough bad stuff to become evil... she stole his soul and traded it to a demon.

when I first started DMing, I helped my sister build this amazing dragonborn. didn't realize temples would offer to raise dead adventuer's... or that was a thing, I as a DM could do... it was bad.

I like to add a weird “shopkeeper” in every campaign I do that rewards the players for indulging the NPC’s unconventional trades. Currently that NPC is a homunculus teddy bear that needs a constant stream of fresh body parts to stay alive, in return he supplies the party with magical items.

Made addiction a thing in the campaign and every time the cleric healed the party they began to become addicted to the healing buffer it provided so small injuries seemed increasingly worse and it's the same with healing potions. >:) The withdraws work similarly to how exhaustion works but worse to keep it short.

My DM included part of a dungeon where a metallic dragon tested the party’s commitment to righteousness by placing us in visions. Mine was I was the new lord of my father’s lands and the BBEG was at the gates saying they would spare the city if I surrendered my head. The final walk down the city streets was so heart wrenching and before the execution the vision ended. This was done in private discord lobbies and all of us were haggard coming back to the call. One of us did not pass the test.

so my players when through some dramatic stuff that would leave normal people feeling awful and mentally scarred them. so I scheduled a group therapy session for my players with an actual therapist and we all went in character. best 500 I've ever spent.

My player (half orc) unknowingly killed his full orc adoptive parents in a fire. His brother tracked him down- and told him "They didn't just die once. We are orcs. They woke up and suffered it all again - because of your cowardice" ( and because of the Relentless Endurance trait).

I had them rescue a girl taken by werewolves. The father offera a silver sword as payment saying its been passed down for generations but it's no longer needed.
Two weeks later characters come back along the same road and decide to check in on the family.
Rogue: "We uh, should've checked to see if she had lycanthropy before giving her back."
Fighter: "Should've let him keep the family sword too."

Party ignored Strahd’s invitation to dinner so Rahadin came and TPK’d the 5 person party. The cleric came to and saw the scattered remains of the other 4 and 3 diamonds. Rahadin told him to choose which was worth the least as payment. When the cleric chose the rogue, Rahadin pulled out a scroll, revived him anyways, and told the rogue “When it came down to the decision, your priest decided your life had no value. Remember that.” And left.

Everyone had blind sight or devils sight. Strahd, Master of Mists, creates a fog cloud and none of them see him go through a wall and run around the catacombs (fun boss fight)
