@mattiewex: #stitch with @couplagoofs can you screw up language development for your kiddo? Science suggests not really!!! #babytalk #linguistics #childlanguagedevelopment
What's really beautiful is that while a child is acquiring the culture's language, when parents adopt their little missayings the child is creating their family's shared language as well. We have quite a few sayings and words left from our children's early years that mean nothing to anyone except us and it's a lovely connection to each other an era of our lives ❤️Both kids articulate and literate young adults so I can confirm no harm occured lol

I lowkey wonder if my mom being autistic kind of , helped? She never spoke baby talk. We were spoken to fully like adults because she was weirded out by baby talk. As our main caregiver she also didn’t favor English so our concept of language was kinda different than a lot of other kids (we were around our polish neighbors who spoke a bit of Russian/Ukranian and polish. It was during the peak of when children learn languages in the same way they learn their mother tongue, so I kind of picked up a mix of those 4 as one language. Which made it hard to learn English in school because it was not taught phonetically like I had been taught polish. I can’t speak polish/that mix of Russian/Ukranian very well right now BUT I can read it and understand it in a more fluent way than I can read English most of the time. I’m working on all but it’s still a struggle). I’ve seen this happen in multilingual communities before but it’s abnormal for where I grew up because there was a very “English must be the dominant language “ cultural view

This is actually so helpful lmao my son just turned 1 and hasn’t really said much. We’re counting one “no” as his first word and I’m nervous about it since it seems like other kids his age are talking but he’ll get there.

what I've seen people say is that ppl think "baby talk" where you pronounce consonants wrong is maybe not great, but that "parentese" where you slow down, pitch your voice higher, get a little sing-song (think Ms Rachel) can be pretty helpful. but yeah, you just need to talk at all

Not only is there no negative impact, what a joyful example of love between two of your care givers. Baby garbanzo would be so lucky
