When I went to get my closing cost check the teller goes “oh usually attorneys just have people wire the money, are you sure you need a bank check?” And I said “ma’am they SPECIFICALLY told me not to wire the money”

I’m an escrow officer in Texas and we had this happen to a buyer about 6-7 years ago it was wild, but luckily in that buyers situation, the FBI was eventually able to recover the funds

We got a cashier’s check. I sent it to the lender’s realtor. They yelled at me because I sent it to their office. (It was covid and they didn’t want to go into the office.) They said they would reject it and I could just drive it over to the realtor’s house. It was an hour away. Realtor lived like, 1/4 mile from their office 😐

This is why the bank I work for specifically asks the customer who is initiating the wire if they have received any updated instructions from other company/agent. Happens all the time

Our mortgage broker warned us BIG on these scams! Somehow these scammers know you are closing and will send you "wire transfer directions" a day before closing, or around then. It's CRAZY

When we get the wire from Frontline staff, we take an extra step by looking up the title company, calling them, and verify the instructions if the customer didn't call them to verify.
