6 years ago, the first fitting of a modified Martin-Baker Mk-18 (An existing variant from a Textron AirLand Scorpion Prototype Program) was test into our F-16C Cockpit for use at an upcoming Air Force Association Trade Show in Washington D.C. At that time there was a competive program for what was called Next Generation Ejection Seat, a replacement for the line of ACES II Ejection Seats which have served well, but had become dated and had some maintenance difficulties in that a complex operation to install and remove seats required Canopy Removal and special Ground Support Equipment in some cases. This seat was modified by MB in the UK to do a basic fit at that time and had additional mods worked in our hangar to satisfy fit and clearance issues. Fast forward to current day, the US18E Seat is a completely different bespoke seat in the F-16 Viper. In other videos below in this feed the evolution of that seat/program can be seen. Subsequent Industry/Military trade shows and demonstrations featured the Prototype final configuration which helped this program to come into contract. New Block 70 F-16's will have this seat installed and retro-fit to existing US Air National Guard and many interested International Viper operators. Being a small part of this program was very satisfying and anything that give that extra margin for escape and survival of Aircrew has deep meaning for me. Martin-Baker has been a leader in design of escape systems since the late 40s and has been owned by the same family this entire time.
