It's important to remember that once you're a naturalized U.S. citizen, your rights are protected. No immigration officer has the authority to take away your passport at the border unless you're going through a rare, legal process led by a federal judge. If you’re not in that process, you can travel safely. Everyone should know their rights to avoid unnecessary fear.

Again - you assume these people will follow the law. If they refuse to return your passport you then have to go to court to get it back. They could claim the passport is fake. It will be on the traveller to prove otherwise.

I was held for 6 hours at JFK coming back from Europe last month. I am a born in America American citizen with a US passport with no “blemishes” on my record… So I don’t think you’re right unfortunately

Can a customs agent ask me how I became a naturalized citizen? Happened to me in May of 2016 crossing the border in Buffalo, NY. He held my passport for almost 10 mins after asking how I became a citizen.
