@jonas_the_mad_hatter: Replying to @velvet0529 Tales from the trenches: What to expect from the letters you will receive from your recruit? #military #drillinstructor #recruit #letters #bootcamp #homesick #parents
My son graduated 8/30/24 PI. Those first 2-3 letters were rough! That first call after the crucible I will never forget, “Mama, I made it!” Remarkable. 🇺🇸

I needed to see this this morning. I have received those letters and I have had a hard time. However I am learning that no news is truly good news because even though I have gotten those dark letters I haven't received any calls thay he is actually coming home or quiting and I hold on to that because it means he has being powering through! 3 weeks from today he starts the crucible!!

My 18 y/o left to boot camp 3 days ago and yeah that first call was exactly what has been described. 5 seconds of yelling that he’s okay & will write, love you then bam hang up. My husband waited all night for the call & then 5 seconds later it was over.

Our son just graduated. My suggestion is to literally write everyday and send to him and other recruits it getting letters. We send letters with quotes, song lyrics just don’t send food. We used shoebox appt it worked somewhat we used thst everyday it got expensive but oh well.

I’m my experience and a marine mom and an army mother in law. These guys go through ups and downs just like us moms. We have good days, bad days and great days.

My head knows tens of thousands have gone thru recruit training and 99% of them live to tell. So, it’s a process and change is hard. You gotta trust the system. My heart says different! That marine is still my baby and I need to protect him.

so glad you mentioned pets... I was kind of worried to do that. Didn't want pet picture to be a reason for them to get yelled at.

I made the mistake of telling my parents that I got sick and not mentioning how and my mom ended up calling my Senior DI, on the day of our PFT once we got back to the house(I was lead series had it in the morning) we had chow and my Senior called me out saying to hurry up and eat and let him know when I was done. He then proceeded to tell the whole platoon not to be telling our parents anything that might worry them especially if they didn’t know how things worked while we were training. After I was done my senior pulled me into the duty hut and had me make a phone call home to clarify that yes I had pneumonia and an upper respiratory infection but that I was doing well. Afterwards my senior said to “stop telling my parents I was dying”. Definitely took off a big weight off their minds, and definitely shouldn’t have worried them.
