@JCPenney @JCPenneyBeauty I want to speak up about something that needs to be addressed especially in the beauty and retail world. my friend and I, a group of young Black women, were followed around by a JCPenney associate as if we were trying to steal. We were simply shopping doing nothing suspicious, just browsing like everyone else. But this associate felt the need to follow us around the store, making us feel uncomfortable, watched, and stereotyped. The situation escalated when I pulled out my phone to document the interaction and the associate, knowing she was wrong, got defensive and said “I’m going to record you too.” Let’s be very clear: this kind of behavior is unacceptable. There is no reason anyone should be treated like a suspect just for being Black and shopping. We came into the store ready to spend money nearly $500 worth of products and despite how we were treated, we still made our purchases. But that doesn’t excuse the racial profiling we experienced. This needs to be addressed because it’s bigger than just us it’s about how Black Shoppers are made to feel like criminals in public spaces, when all we want to do is shop in peace.
