Important Note on Inter-Species Introductions Introducing puppies or adult dogs to new animals should always be done slowly, carefully, and with the safety of all animals as the top priority. Whether it’s a dog meeting a cat, a bird, or any other species, the introduction should never be rushed especially when introducing a predator species to a prey animal. At no point should any animal be displaying fear based behaviors. If you are unsure of how to introduce your dog or puppy to another animal in your home, please consult a professional trainer or behaviorist. These introductions must be done with clear structure and complete control to prevent accidents and ensure everyone’s safety. The bird featured in this video is my 8.5 year old Green Cheeked Conure, Parody. She’s been raised alongside multiple dogs including Eva, Koda, and my first service dog, Loki. Parody is extremely social, confident, and endlessly curious which can sometimes get her into trouble. That’s also why exposing her to dogs in a safe, structured way has been beneficial for her, too. Parody is fully flighted and more than capable of setting boundaries. She’s not afraid to deliver a correctional nip if a dog invades her space and every single one of my dogs has learned that respect the hard way. Huck was corrected once by her, and that was enough. He got it. Once Parody felt safe, she relaxed and chose to stay close for a bit before flying off to do her own thing. We never forced this interaction. It was on her terms. That’s a critical point. If you’re considering introducing your dog to a bird or another species in your household, and you’re not sure how to do it safely and ethically, please don’t try it alone, get help. I am a professional with over 15 years of experience, and while this may not be a method everyone agrees with or feels comfortable doing, please trust that I know what I’m doing. You don’t have to do it my way and that’s okay. But you do need to ensure the safety and emotional wellbeing of every animal in your care. #DogTraining #socializenottraumatize #puppy #greencheekconure #dogtrainer #PositiveReinforcement #ObedienceTraining
