@alternativehorsemanship: 3 Horse Teeth Facts Horses' teeth never stop growing (sort of): Horses are born with teeth that continue to erupt throughout much of their lives to compensate for the natural wear from grinding food. However, they don't grow forever—eventually, the reserve crown is used up, usually by their late 20s. You can estimate a horse’s age by its teeth: Vets and equine experts can often estimate a horse's age by examining the length, shape, and wear patterns of its teeth. This method is most accurate up to around 10 years old. Adult horses have 36 to 44 teeth: Most adult mares have 36–40 teeth, while stallions and geldings usually have 40–44, including canine teeth (also called "tushes") and sometimes extra wolf teeth (small, vestigial premolars). #alternativehorsemanship #horseowner #horsehealth #horseteeth #creatorsearchinsights

technically the teeth dont grow through the horses life, they just continue to erupt. Horses are hyspodonts, not hypselodonts (forever erupting, not forever growing). The tooth actually quits developing about 2 years post eruption from the gums. This also means that teeth can "expire" which is when they've been erupted and ground down to the point where there isnt much left and is no longer useful. And the galvaynes groove is not the best method for aging a horse, the occlusal surface of the incisors is. Between the ages of 2.5 and 20, horses hit certain milestones pretty consistently and someone very experienced can accurately age a horse with normal wear patterns withing 6-12 months. After 20, the galvaynes groove is the best method because the occlusal surface doesn't change significantly in a way we can use to estimate age.
